I’m often asked for advice on visiting gardens in the UK.The National Garden Scheme opens gardens around England and Wales to raise money for a range of charities. While grander gardens often open for a special NGS day, the main strength of the scheme is that it encourages beautiful small and middle-sized gardens to open. …
Dr. Gail Matthews at Dominican University of California found that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them than those who don’t. Here’s what that study didn’t say: most of those people still ran out of steam by month two. The problem isn’t commitment. It’s structure. A 90-day goal without …
The common assumption is that a digital detox is a willpower challenge. You take your phone, lock it in a drawer, grit your teeth through the urge to check Instagram, and come out the other side feeling virtuous. Three days, done. That’s not what happened to me. I lasted about four hours on day one …
Why Fitness Data Goes Unused — and How to Fix That Before You Buy The watch is not the problem. The habit is. Most budget fitness trackers end up in a drawer within three weeks — not because they break, but because the data they collect never connects to a behavior change. You check your …
You can grow wildflowers in a border, a pot and a window box as well as in a meadow. A good wildflower seed mix can keep colour going with changing flowers for months at a time. And the cost of a few packets of seeds makes this a cheap way of filling a border. It’s …
Which wallet will you still want in your pocket two years from now — and which one ends up in a drawer after the novelty wears off? That’s the real question. The Bellroy Slim Sleeve ($69) and the Ridge Wallet (starting at $95) solve the same problem in completely different ways. The wrong choice creates …
Here’s the misconception that costs people $200 or more: smart home devices are about voice commands. They’re not. The actual value is automation — your lights on when you wake up, coffee starting before you’re dressed, your house cooling down before you get home. Voice is just the interface. The platform you pick determines which …
Six months in, the clearest change wasn’t mood or productivity — it was pattern recognition. Problems I’d been treating as surprise events had been showing up in my life for weeks. I just hadn’t been writing them down. The journal didn’t solve anything on its own. But it made invisible things visible, and that changed …
Most sustainable grilling advice starts in the wrong place. It leads with bamboo tongs and compostable plates — swaps that feel meaningful but barely affect the actual footprint of a cookout. The real environmental cost comes from three things: your fuel source, how much food ends up in the trash, and whether the “eco” products …
The average American household wastes roughly $1,500 in food every year, and most of that loss traces back to a single failure point: the seal. Not the fridge temperature. Not how the food was cooked. The seal on the bag holding leftovers overnight. Stasher and Bumkins are the two brands that come up most consistently …
